SAFE-U Notifications Update

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff, Early last Saturday, March 7, all students, faculty, and staff associated with the Twin Cities campus received a Safe-U message from the Department of Public Safety. Due to a procedural error, that message was sent via email, text, and phone call, and requested confirmation of receipt. While the information you received was accurate, our process calls for this type of message to only be sent via email. We understand receiving this message through these delivery methods may have been confusing. We apologize for the disruption caused by the over-delivery of a message that did not require immediate action. You may recall that we modified our Safe-U notification process last summer. Below are details on the information we send, why we share it, and the choices you have about how to receive it. · Safe-U Emergency: These notifications will be sent when we believe there is an immediate threat or imminent danger to the campus community. You will receive a notification by text, email, and/or phone call, depending on the situation and your chosen preferences. Alerts will include instructions meant to prompt you to take action for your safety. · Safe-U Advisories: These will be sent by email when a situation poses a serious or ongoing risk, but is not an imminent threat to safety. These messages are intended to increase awareness about potential risks you might encounter. All Twin Cities students, faculty, and staff members are automatically enrolled in the notification system. To update your contact information and notification preferences, visit MyU > My Info > Safe-U Alerts. You may change your settings for text and phone, but federal law does not allow you to opt out of email messages. Mike Berthelsen Vice President, University Services
